Agent Login RegisterSaint Eustatius (EUX), or Statia, is a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles, just six miles long by three miles wide. The island is reachable by ferry from Saint Kitts, or by a short flight or ferry from Sint Maarten. Oranjestad, its capital, offers a variety of historical sites, restaurants, and bars. Dutch is the official language, but English is spoken everywhere. Generally dry and sunny, the daytime temperature averages 80°F with cooling trade winds.
Surrounded by volcanic sand beaches, the coastline’s steep cliffs offer magnificent views of the ocean and hidden bays. The island’s highlight is the Quill, one of its two extinct volcanoes. Trails get hikers to the top in about an hour, rewarding them with incredible views and a lush, tropical rainforest in its enormous crater. A 17th-century wall that once protected the city has been taken over by the sea, allowing snorkelers to explore remnants of warehouses, along with beautiful coral reefs and endless species of marine life. Divers can explore more than a dozen 18th-century shipwrecks—all without crowds.
