On the northern coast of Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata’s sunny beaches and affordable all-inclusives have their share of loyal devotees. These sit on a land that rises abruptly from the sea, a stunning sight from the port and natural harbor. Another lovely vantage point for the town is from the first aerial tramway of the Caribbean, which glides up Pico Isabel de Torres, a mountain within the city. From its summit, wander the seven-acre botanical garden; descending, look for the 16th century Fortaleza San Felipe, the amber museum, El Faro lighthouse, and Christopher Columbus’s La Isabela, the first village in the New World.
Back on ground level, by the resort areas of Playa and Costa Dorada, seek out Ocean World, the largest man-made dolphin habitat in the world, for animal attractions that even include Malayan tigers, its yacht marina, and a casino.
